Dorko
Solingen Germany
1920 - present
The present-day enterprise developed out of a plant founded in 1920 by Friedrich Dorten in Solingen-Merscheid which initially produced only barbers' razors and mainly supplied Solingen exporters. Constant growth, however, made it advisable for the firm to start exporting on its own. Soon other articles of the cutlery industry were added to the selection of products. After the Second World War Friedrich Dorten jr. joined the firm and the name was changed to 'DORKO Stahlwarenfabrik Dorten & Co.'. The expansion of the factory made it possible also to increase the range of products, which now included scissors, shaving utensils, manicure and pedicure implements. Particular attention has always been paid to quality, a fact that has made DORKO renowned throughout the world. Today Robert Dorten represents the third generation of the family.

LANDERS, FRARY & CLARK
New Britain, Connecticut
ca. 1865 - 1950

Landers, Frary & Clark traces its start to the time George Landers, age sixteen, arrived in New Britain, Connecticut in 1829 looking for a job. He soon went to work for Josiah Dewey who, seven years earlier, had started a small foundry making cupboard latches and other hardware. After Dewey's death, it became Landers & Smith Manufacturing Company in 1853. As president, Landers' salary was seven hundred dollars a year.

In 1862 the small but prosperous company made another of the many acquisitions that were to mark its history and growth in future years. It acquired the firm of Frary, Clark & Company, of Meriden Connecticut, the company name changed to Landers, Frary & Clark, which it retained for the next full century of its existence.

MAPPIN & WEBB CO
Manufacturing Goldsmiths & Silversmiths

Mappin & Webb

The roots of the firm can be traced to around 1810, when Joseph Mappin established a family business, which became known as Mappin Brothers, making and selling cutlery on Norfolk Street. Internal disputes led to Newton Mappin leaving Mappin Brothers to set up his own electroplating business around the 1850s, which soon became Mappin & Webb.

By the end of the 1880s, Mappin Brothers was purchased by the Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co of London. In contrast, Mappin & Webb continued to enjoy commercial success, to the extent that Newton Mappin was able to purchase back Mappin Brothers from its London owner during the early 1900s.

However, like many Sheffield firms, business appears to have dwindled during the middle of the 1900s. Walker & Hall, Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co were brought together in 1963 to form British Silverware Limited of Sheffield. Mappin & Webb currently exists as a luxury retailer and is owned by Asprey & Co.

About Mappin & Webb…
The roots of the firm can be traced to around 1810, when Joseph Mappin established a business making and selling cutlery on Norfolk Street. Other family members joined the expanding firm, which traded as Mappin Brothers. A shop and warehouse space was established in London during the 1840s, enabling the business to grow further by trading directly with affluent customers.

Mappin & Webb, however, continued to enjoy commercial success. The firm manufactured a vast range of holloware and table cutlery. Such was its success, that Newton Mappin was able to purchase back Mappin Brothers during the early 1900s.

However, like many Sheffield firms, the firm's fortunes declined during the middle of the 1900s. Walker & Hall, Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co were brought together in 1963 to form British Silverware Limited of Sheffield. Mappin & Webb currently exists as a luxury retailer and is owned by Asprey & Co.

Joseph Rodgers & Sons Sheffield museum

Joseph Rodgers & Sons was one of the largest cutlery manufacturers in Sheffield in the late 1800s. The company's famous star and Maltese cross mark was registered in 1764. By the end of the 1700s, they had established a factory on Norfolk Street.

In 1887 the firm began to manufacture its own crucible and shear steel, culminating in the purchase of the Sheaf Island Works in 1907. By the end of the 1800s Joseph Rodgers & Sons was certainly one of the largest cutlery manufacturers in the world. However, the firm did not escape the decline in Sheffield's cutlery trade during the early 1900s. Foreign competition, increasing mechanisation and the advent of stainless steel contributed to their decline. The company underwent a number of takeovers during the 1900s. The rights to the name and cutlery marks were bought most recently by the Egginton Group of Companies in Sheffield.

Who made this object?
This multi bladed penknife was made by the firm Joseph Rodgers & Sons of Sheffield, around 1840. Joseph Rodgers & Sons was one of the largest and most prolific cutlery manufacturers based in the city. The company's famous star and Maltese cross mark was registered with the Company of Cutlers in 1764. By the end of the 1700s, the firm had established a factory on Norfolk Street.

By the turn of the 1800s Joseph Rodgers & Sons was producing a vast range of goods. This included their famous penknives and pocket knives, as well as scissors, table cutlery and razors. In 1887 the firm began to manufacture its own high quality crucible and shear steel using iron imported from Sweden.

How was the object used?
This penknife has a total of sixteen short, folding blades. They are slender with pointed ends. Each blade is marked 'RODGERS'. Before the introduction of steel pen nibs, quills made from feathers were used for writing. Penknives were used to cut the quill to provide a perfect point for writing. The end of the feather was first cut to a point. A small, vertical nick was then cut into the very tip of the quill to enable the ink to flow evenly onto the page.

Joseph Rodgers & Sons later developed an automatic quill cutter to make the preparation of quill pens simpler. These were made from brass and had a spring action. The end of the quill was placed into the cutter and the lever pressed down to cut it to shape in one step. However, a penknife was still required to cut the vertical slit into the point of the quill.

This penknife is very elaborate and would have been used as a decorative as well as functional item. It would have been used at a desk alongside a wide range of writing equipment including an inkstand for storing ink, tapersticks and wax for sealing letters, and a box for holding stamps.

What is the object made from?
The blades of this penknife are made from steel and the scales are made from ivory. The knife is unusual as it has four separate ivory scales, giving it a cylindrical shape. Most knives and razors have only two scales, one on each side of the handle.

Joseph Rodgers & Sons used expensive imported materials for the manufacture of decorative hafts and scales. They bought mother of pearl from the Philippines, stag and buffalo horn from India and tropical woods from the West Indies. The firm also used vast quantities of ivory (elephant tusks) that was bought in bulk from traders in London, Antwerp and Liverpool. It is said that four or five men were employed by the firm to continuously saw ivory into small pieces for making handles.

What happened to Joseph Rodgers & Sons?
Joseph Rodgers & Sons did not escape the decline in Sheffield's traditional cutlery trade during the early 1900s. The declining market led to the sale of the Norfolk Street factory in 1929. Foreign competition, increasing mechanisation and the advent of stainless steel contributed to their decline. The company underwent a number of takeovers during the 1900s. The rights to the name and cutlery marks were bought most recently by the Egginton Group of Companies in Sheffield.

Revealing the object's Hidden History…
As part of the DCF funded Living Metal project, we visited Trevor Ablett to find out more about how the penknife was made.

Hidden History: how was it used?
Trevor described the object as a "gentleman's penknife"; a decorative item not for everyday use.

Hidden History: how was it made?
"[I've] never attempted to make a knife like that Never made anything like it".

Trevor examined the knife and concluded it was made on the same basic principal as putting a single bladed knife together. The blades would be fitted to forked springs. There are two of these springs at each side of the knife.

However, the knife would have taken days to put together as there are so many blades to dress. Trevor stated that the cutler would need to be "very delicate to do this kind of work", as it requires a light touch and is "very skilfully made".

Each of the scales has been carved from a single piece of ivory.

Hidden History: About Trevor Ablett
Trevor began his working life making knives with his uncle, Emile, after leaving school. His uncle's workshop was on Athol Road in Sheffield. After five years Trevor went on to make open razors for A Myers, who worked in the same building. Trevor made open razors for five years, before returning to work with his uncle. He has made knives ever since.

From 1980 Trevor Ablett worked for Joseph Elliot's on Sylvester Street. In 1990 he began working on his own from premises on Egginton Lane, before moving to Randle Street. He is now based at Norfolk Barracks.

Trevor has made every type of common knife since being taught the trade by Harry Wragg ("I owe my career to Harry"). Trevor has an incredible fifty years of experience in the industry. He is one a small number of cutlers working independently in the city today.

Thomas Turner & Co

Thomas Turner & Co was established in the early 1800s by Thomas Turner and was based at the Suffolk Works on Norfolk Street. Its 'Encore' trademark was registered in the mid 1800s, having previously been registered by another cutler, Luke Brownell.

Thomas Turner & Co made a large range of goods including table knives, saws, files and edge tools. Like some of the other larger cutlery firms, it also produced and forged its own crucible steel using imported Swedish bar iron. The company supplied the Navy with open razors and exported its knives across the British Colonies.

By the late 1800s Thomas Turner & Co was one of the most important cutlery firms in Sheffield. By the early 1900s it had increased in size by merging with the cutlery firms Wingfield, Rowbotham & Co and Joseph Haywood & Co. This increased its number of employees from 300 to 1,000. A souvenir publication dating to around 1903 notes that 18,000 machine forged table knife blades were being produced at Suffolk Works each week.

The company supplied the Navy with open razors and exported its knives across the British Colonies.

Who might have owned these objects?
This knife and fork are of the kind that would have been found on the dinner table of an average working home in the 1890s. A trade catalogue from 1914 indicates that at that time they cost between 14 to 18 shillings for a set of twelve knives and forks. The price varied according to the thickness of the stag handles. Smaller dessert sets were sold at around 8 to 11 shillings per dozen. They were still being sold in 1925, though their price had increased considerably. A set of twelve table knives and forks had risen to as much as 34 shillings and a dessert set to 31 shillings.

Why are the hafts made from stag?
The making of stag and horn hafts and scales (two piece handles attached to knives, forks and open razors) was a huge industry in Sheffield, particularly during the 1800s. Stag was a very popular choice as it was cheap, durable and attractive. The hafts of this knife and fork are attached using a rod of metal known as a through tang. This rod is usually made from iron as it is cheaper than steel. The tang runs through the entire length of the stag haft, creating a sturdy join. A plain steel end cap has been attached to the end of the tang to secure the blade to the haft.

Where did the stag come from?
Some of the stag used for hafting cutlery and flatware during the 1800s came from Scotland. More expensive varieties could be imported from countries such as India.

These objects form part of the Bill Brown Collection. Supported by The Art Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and the Friends of Sheffield Galleries & Museums Trust.

James was also listed in Walsingham as hairdresser/perfumer. He could have had two places of business, or Walsingham may have been his place of residence. James is listed in the 1851 census as a "cutler and perfumer", in Norwich and as an Ironmonger on his son William's marriage certificate in 1852. A later advertisement by James (1848 or later), advertises his invention of "J. Tyzack's Double Patent British Razors", from a shop on the High Street in Wells.
