Lorenzi

Messaggio da Aldebaran »

The Lorenzi, knife in Montenapoleone, are natives of Rendena Valley, Trentino. The valley, before it had the resources now in summer just gave the grass needed to sustain livestock. Of this, during the long winter mountain is occupied and the old women, while men are more daring their way, often pushing their wheel, look elsewhere for an alternative source of labor: migration started from the second half of last century. Even John Lorenzi Mortaso born in 1899, was one of these emigrants after spending some years in Germany as "caciàl" boy grinder in 1919 came to Milan with his brothers to put into practice what the experience had taught.

In Montenapoleone settled in 1929. He was then a small shop in the basement where he played an intense grinding. The beginning was very difficult: Lorenzi told that Mum and Dad on Christmas Eve the first year of opening only one customer had made a purchase from them. The global crisis of those years and further damage to the shop for the bombings of 1943 put a strain on their forces. Only after some time the job took a regular rhythm and "Knives Lorenzo began to consolidate.

First, the sharpening was the only source of income and the sale of knives, scissors or other happened almost accidentally, on request. But was this slow start to allow John Lorenzi degrees to specialize in his field. Meanwhile, he kept close to her children that even in the early games, trains between formats with empty tins of razor blades, broken parts and more, almost unconsciously absorbed the work of the father are formed and learned to observe and experience.

A source of stimulating teaching was provided by the heterogeneous clientele that was forming in the street, not only what the market demanded, but also brought new objects, responsive to their needs. Just starting with this question and a great determination to fulfill, Lorenzi adjust their system of work: giving customers the object really useful, built in the best way. It 'a very laborious to run this, because it requires a continuous innovation and achievement in craftsmanship both inside and outside the store.

Lorenzi I travel the world with keen eye for what is well designed and manufactured, getting ideas for new creations and using an appropriate opportunity to details better. Hence the difficult choice of the excellent craftsmanship, which, once found, is still reluctant to accept an unusual type work, accustomed to the comfortable monotony of the series. Hence the need to produce their own articles more prestigious. In them, besides the search for valuable materials, there is an urgent return to the natural ones: a desire to provide the object "to keep and not delete the first damage. And 'This is a principle of professional ethics and reveals a love of nature and the environment from which Lorenzi were not removed: the wood, horn, leather, copper, brass recalls huts, forests and animals. Certainly the natural material is more delicate and more easily be ruined during processing that with use, it follows a more challenging with the customer must accept its characteristics. Here the need for committed employees who really are capable of first love and deepen their work, then pass their knowledge to the customer and in turn learn from it: all can be useful to consolidate the experience of Lorenzi. And 'to remember the words spoken by a customer, indecisive in front of two items for the same use, but of different construction and consequent price different: "I take the best, because they are not rich enough to afford to spend less." His response is one of many not forgotten over the years.

In 1959 Father Lorenzi returned among its mountains (where he died in 1992), permanently leaving their children the responsibility to continue his work. And 'that year the expansion of the store and approach to the world of smoking, which began with the sale of lighters and completed in 1964, that the pipes and smoking accessories. As for the cutlery, the beginning was cautious and deepening of the field based on continuous research.

In 1983 the store was further extended and modified, but always respecting its original footprint. E 'was also restored in that part of the basement which once held the job of grinding: this has made possible the creation of a corner a bit' apart from the rest of the store, which are also proposed items made by artisans of the past and now considered "unique". The intention is to complement our news urging fast in modern production, in order to highlight the benefits offered by the latter, but at the same time offer a valuable witness to what has been done in other times and preserve memory.

In the same spirit was formed over the years a collection of the most significant objects of varying ages and backgrounds, from the range of items processed, to enable, by organizing exhibitions, a further exchange of knowledge and experience with audiences increasingly prepared and demanding.
